Case Study
Property: IOSH educational facility
Industry: Education
Contract Awarded to: RiskFire Ltd
Type of Contract: FRA
Location: The Grange, Highfield Dr, Wigston, LE181NN
Project Duration: 1 day
Project Overview and Scope
RiskFire delivered a Fire Risk Assessment for IOSH, focusing on the suitability of fire exits, emergency signage, escape routes, and fire doors throughout the facility. The assessment examined the existing arrangements against current fire safety regulations, ensuring occupant protection and identifying areas requiring improvement to maintain compliance.
Project Controls and Documentation Provided
- The assessment was completed using the Firehub app, with full findings documented and issued to the client upon completion.
Challenges and Solutions
The assessment highlighted a number of compliance gaps within the facility. The main entrance operated as a sliding-door fire exit which, although supported by multiple exits and alarm-linked fail-safes, required ongoing monitoring to ensure continued suitability. Directional and emergency escape signage was insufficient in several areas, particularly the main entrance, where additional guidance was required to support safe evacuation. Routine inspections of escape routes, exits, fastenings, and gangways were not being conducted frequently, increasing the potential for routes to become obstructed or fall out of compliance over time. Additionally, no formal schedule existed for fire door inspections along escape routes and final exits, creating a risk that faults could go unnoticed.
RiskFire provided targeted recommendations to address these issues. Regular testing of the sliding door’s fail-safe mechanisms was advised to confirm ongoing suitability as a fire exit, alongside maintaining clear access to all egress points. A full review of directional and escape signage was undertaken, with the installation of compliant emergency signage recommended throughout key areas to support occupant wayfinding. To strengthen routine maintenance, RiskFire advised the introduction of a documented inspection schedule covering escape routes, exits, fastenings, and gangways at appropriate intervals. Six-monthly fire door inspections were recommended to ensure functionality and continued compliance, supported by formal record keeping to demonstrate ongoing management of fire safety provisions.
Outcome and Outputs Achieved
Following the adoption of RiskFire’s recommendations, fire exit arrangements were strengthened through regular monitoring of the main entrance sliding door. Additional compliant signage improved the clarity of evacuation routes, and the introduction of scheduled inspections enabled proactive management of escape routes and gangways. Routine fire door checks established early identification of any deterioration, while the implementation of structured record keeping enhanced overall compliance. These measures collectively improved the safety and resilience of the facility’s fire safety arrangements.
